Prayer and Intercession

April 30, 2015 Pastor Florence

Introduction

REFERENCE: LUKE 18:1 and MATTHEW 6:10
Many ask themselves; what is prayer? A Christian’s prayer is communication with the Lord.
Like all communication, it has a purpose and the purpose usually determines the mode and relevant details for the communication to be effective.
Religious prayer:
Peter and his group were Jews, they knew how to pray religiously but after they had been with the Lord for a while and saw the incredible impact his ministry had, they asked Him in LUKE 11:1
“LORD TEACH US TO PRAY LIKE YOU”

Point One

Like the Jews then, many have a misconception: our understanding of prayer is distorted possibly because we have not studied about prayer.
Prayer may be referred to as the breath of a Christian; if we do not pray, we die spiritually.
Prayer is very important to us and is a privilege and honour.
Every time a Christian prays they are investing into eternity.
Through prayer a Christian participates in the communion of the god kind.
Our fellowship in the place of prayer is with the Father, his son Jesus Christ.
When Christians pray, we make tremendous power available; that power is dynamic in its working and brings changes in our lives and surroundings.
1 THESS 5: 17 says - pray without ceasing and Jesus said men out always to pray and not faint.

Point Two

Our platforms for prayers:
The first platform is having a relationship with the Father. This relationship determines the outcome of our prayer. As a child of God, you must be conscious of your relationship with Him. It is beyond master and servant relationship.
The second platform is the presence of the Holy Spirit inside of us. In the Old Testament - Genesis 1:1 God and the Holy Spirit worked together.
Genesis 1:1-3: In the beginning god created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the spirit of god moved upon the face of the waters. And god said, let there be light: and there was light.

From the above scriptures, we see that the Holy Spirit works with God outside the human being but in the New Testament, our dispensation; God works through the Christians that are filled with the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 2:8-10: Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes you yourselves captive by his so-called philosophy and intellectualism and vain deceit idle fancies and plain nonsense, following human tradition men’s ideas of the material rather than the spiritual world, just crude notions following the rudimentary and elemental teachings of the universe and disregarding the teachings of Christ the messiah.

Vs. 9:
For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. For in him the whole fullness of deity the Godhead continues to dwell in bodily form giving complete expression of the divine nature. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: and you are in him, made full and having come to fullness of life in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—and reach full spiritual stature. And he is the head of all rule and authority of every angelic principality and power.

Vs 10:
This means, the Father Son and the Holy Spirit dwells in you.

What ever God wants to do on earth today:

Today, through you God brings his will to bear on earth.
Today, through you God’s visions and plans are being revealed on the earth.
Today on earth, through you God’s works are being done.
God works through the spirit filled born again believers today.

Therefore, there are things that will not happen on earth unless the Christians prays no matter how urgent, how desperate, how important, nothing will happen unless spirit filled Christians prays. Amen!

Point Three

Faith is essential when we pray to God. Everything a born again child of God does, must be done in faith and faith comes through the Word of God, "So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God"(Roman 10:17)
The bible says, the just shall live by faith. God expects every one of his children to engage passionately in the room of prayer and get results. And without faith, it is impossible to please God.

Point Four

There are different kinds of prayer.

Intercessory prayer:

Intercessory prayer is praying the will of the Father to happen on the earth. (Matthew 6:10)
In intercessory prayers you intercede for others besides yourself.

Pray the will of the Father for nations, for communities, for country and people and families, etc.

In intercessory prayer, you focus on God’s will for others, you take the focus away from your needs and focus on spiritual issues.

Jesus taught us how to pray in Matt 6:10.

Benefits of praying for others:

  1. Exposes you to God’s immeasurable anointing
  2. You may see visions
  3. You will be in position to change destinies
  4. You will be in position to change situations
  5. You can stop accidents
  6. You can stop earthquake
  7. You can reverse death
  8. You can release healing into a nation
  9. You can stop wars
  10. You can raise the dead
  11. The Lord makes tremendous power available for you when you are interceding for others.

God empowers you to carry out his will and vision He makes tremendous power available which is dynamic in working and brings changes.

Finally, if you do not pray for others, you are sinning.
"moreover, as for me. God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you .........." (1 Samuel 12:23)
